The String Scholars method

A breakthrough approach to cello

At Keys of Joy, we use the String Scholars method โ€” a breakthrough string curriculum developed right here at our studio. In the same way we learn to speak before we learn to read and spell, this unique approach delays music reading and theory until the student is ready.

This allows students to play great-sounding music from their very first lessons, build a repertoire, and gain fluency on the instrument before they learn how to read music. It's a much more natural approach than traditional cello lessons โ€” and students love it.

Our instructor Linda Randel chose the cello at age 9, sparking a lifelong love of music around which everything else began to revolve. She's played in school and community orchestras and church ensembles, and studied Elementary Music Education at Ottawa University. As an adult, she returned to the studio herself as a beginner on violin โ€” an experience that reminded her just how much delight there is in starting something new, and brought her back to teaching cello to students of her own.
